What is your Dream Slash Job?

Focusing on my strength

Focusing on my strength – Bamboo Forest, Arashima Kyoto Japan.

What does it mean to have a work that has meaning and perspective to me?

What is meaningful work looks like to me?

It can be different for you and can be different from people that I love and respect and want to gain approval from.

Meaningful work is where I will channel my strength so I will not feel defective, useless, not good enough and lazy. Others can make us feel that way sometimes. ( maybe more than sometimes) They will impose to us what is meaningful for them but not necessary to us.
If we are sure what meaningful work for us, “supposed to” voices from society won’t sway us.

We know who we are and what we wanted.

What I realized is that whatever gives us meaning in the work that we are doing, (mine are spirituality, loving others, and inspiring) our creator gave us strengths and gifts that can satisfy and fulfill that .

Others maybe writing a blog and sharing it to the world is something they really love to do and they are good at it. Taking amazing photographs during your travels is maybe your gift and that is meaningful to you. Others cook amazing food or dance very gracefully and skilfully.

It’s cool to think that God created us differently. Imagine a world full of just bankers or just writers.

For myself, Empathy and compassion helps me to find meaningful work. Work that will not burden me but will give me joy because it is my very heart.

Not all people have works that can satisfy their meaning, but we can always find it. It doesn’t need to be your full time job.

I’m just grateful that I happen to be in a job that I can practice compassion and empathy. I’m working for my church and this exercise helped me to appreciate this calling more. I wish I can have slash / career though. I know I can do it along the way of life.

Find your strength that will satisfy the meaning of your life.

I listed mine and it’s intimidating at first to really pen down what’s inside my heart. Do not be fearful but permit yourselves to let go of self doubts and don’t think of “supposed to ” of the society . It’s a part of me owning my life back.

Here’s my dream list slash career.

I am not a yet good travel blogger/writer and not yet a good photographer but I love and enjoy doing it and it is meaningful to me. I find it exciting that I can do these things op top of the things I also love doing like being in a mission field and loving the poor. I don’t need to be just doing my full time job I can also do what i love to do.

I will forever grateful for author Breńe Brown as she helps me a lot.  She wrote a book Gifts of imperfection.

Below is a quote from her. It is so true.

Just few weeks ago, I teached a class in my church about this. It is important for us to discover and share our gifts because this is where we will appreciate our own being from there the creator of that unique being.

Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms. 1 Peter 4:10

We are designed differently for a beautiful purpose. WE SHOULD KEEP ON DISCOVERING THAT.

So for you what is your dream/slash job?

  1. I am a teacher, so I feel I am doing meaningful work. For awhile, though, it’s been really draining. I have always loved to travel, so when I learned more about travel blogging, I decided to give it a try. I find that this is the perfect creative outlet for me. I am out of school for the summer, but I hope I will be refreshed when I go back to the classroom in August. Thanks for this post. I was able to look inside myself a little. I’m glad you’re doing something meaningful for you!

  2. I love writing and feel like I’m doing my dream slash job. I’m very grateful for having the opportunity to do what makes me happy and what feels meaningful to me. I know you’ll get to make your dreams come true!

  3. I am living my dream right now. I work remotely for a social media company and work only from my computer…from anywhere I want. I believe digital marketing is my gift and I love what I do. Thanks for this post and helping me appreciate my role in the world

  5. I also like Brene Brown. I have listened to one of her TedX talks about being vulnerable. It is great that you are doing things that you are passionate about. It is true that you should be able to have empathy and compassion in order to pursue a meaningful work.

  7. My dream job is what I am doing, sharing the love and importance of the underwater world. What started as a dive instructor job now turned in to an online business spreading the word to a greater audience. Love what you do and you never work another day!

  8. By profession, I am a creative designer. But I found out that my meaningful job is not that. I am currently pursuing what I really want to do, not easy, but I am happier. 🙂

    • this is such a great example. It doesn’t mean we are in the creative line, we love what we do. It all depends. Thats how we are created so wonderfully different from each other.
